Assessment method & independence
PALACE STATUS examines the character of a property, its design, service, guest experience and sustainable practices. The distinction follows a review of the application and an on-site assessment.
How an award is decided
- Application review. The property and supporting evidence are examined for eligibility.
- On-site assessment. Assessors examine the property and hear from its operational management.
- Commission decision. The commission considers the application and assessment findings before awarding or refusing the distinction.
Three separate activities
- Diagnostic and training: optional services with their own scope, fees and deliverables.
- Assessment and distinction: a separate examination and award decision. Buying coaching does not guarantee an award.
- Supplier programme: introductions and supplier services with separate terms. Supplier membership is not a villa or yacht distinction.
Know who is involved before a visit
The published regulations describe appointment of the chair by the label director, voting procedures and conflicts of interest. Current commission membership is available on enquiry; this page does not publish a verified current roster.
Before committing, ask for the names and roles of the proposed assessors and decision-makers, their relevant experience, and how any previous advisory or commercial relationship with your property will be handled.
Make the arrangements explicit
- The criteria and document versions applicable to your villa or yacht.
- The visit scope, participants, duration and operational access needed.
- The deliverables, complete fees and expenses, and payment schedule.
- Confidentiality, information handling and any permission to publish.
- The decision process, validity, renewal and conditions for use of the distinction.
